Care & Consideration
At Bard & Blackwood, every piece of furniture is made to be lived with, designed for everyday use while ageing beautifully over time. We favour materials that are honest and enduring, which means your furniture will require only minimal care to keep it looking its best.
As with all natural materials, wood responds to its surroundings. Changes in temperature, light and humidity may cause subtle movement over time, which is part of its character, not a flaw. Gentle, occasional maintenance will ensure your pieces continue to perform and develop as intended.
Why We Use Solid Wood
We work with solid timber wherever possible for one simple reason: no two pieces are ever the same.
Natural wood brings depth, variation and individuality; qualities that cannot be replicated with manufactured alternatives. It is also a more considered choice: durable, renewable and made to last. For us, it’s not just about how something looks on day one, but how it evolves over years of use.
Caring for Oiled & Varnished Surfaces
Maintaining your furniture is straightforward and requires only a little time and attention.
Everyday care
- Wipe surfaces with a soft, damp cloth
- Dry immediately with a clean cloth to avoid moisture sitting on the surface
- Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners
Refreshing the finish
Over time, you may wish to revive the surface to maintain its protection and appearance.
- Prepare the surface
Clean thoroughly and allow to dry. Lightly sand with the grain using a consistent grit (around 120 for initial preparation). - Remove dust
Ensure all sanding dust is removed using a brush or vacuum, followed by a dry cloth. A clean surface is key to a smooth finish. - Apply finish
- Use oil for kitchen pieces such as islands or butcher’s blocks
- Use varnish for painted or bathroom furniture
Apply evenly, following the grain.
- Wipe back excess
Remove any surplus product with a clean cloth to achieve an even, durable finish. - Second coat (if required)
- Oiled surfaces: apply a second coat after 12–24 hours
- Varnished surfaces: lightly sand with a finer grit (around 240), remove dust, then apply a final coat
Painted Furniture & Finishing Touches
Light marks or scuffs
Gently sand the area using a fine grit sandpaper (around 240), remove dust, and apply a small amount of matching paint with a fine brush. Allow to dry before adding a second coat if needed.
Chips or dents
For deeper imperfections, sand the area (around 120), remove dust and if necessary, apply a suitable wood filler following manufacturers instructions. Once dry, sand smooth and touch up with paint as above. Taking care during preparation will ensure the repair blends seamlessly.
A Final Note
Your furniture is designed to be used, enjoyed, lived with and loved. Over time, it will develop subtle signs of use, these are part of its story. With simple care, each piece will continue to age with character and integrity for years to come.
